Chimney repointing and repair

Chimney work here means the stack itself and the way it meets the roof: mortar joints, the flaunching around the pots, and flashings that let water into the loft. Other upkeep of the building lives under property maintenance.

What Jamie is looking for

Open joints, a cracked flaunching, pots that lean, and lead or mortar fillets that have left the brick. Water from that junction often shows as a stain on a chimney breast, which people first read as a tile problem. The visit is how you tell.

The gallery has a photograph of an opened chimney and roof void, with damaged felt and timber and neighbouring tiled roofs. That is the roof opened up. It is a photograph of the opening, not of a finished repoint.

The rest of the roof

A stack repair often sits beside roof repairs and moss removal. Joe Burton's published review mentions work on a roof and a chimney; the extract is on the homepage.

If the job is decorating after a leak, or a list of small repairs around the house, start at painting and decorating or property maintenance.

Visits from the Isleham base cover Ely, Newmarket and Bury St Edmunds.

What to tell Jamie

You do not need to diagnose it.

  • Whether the chimney is still used, capped, or you are not sure
  • Stains on the breast, or loose mortar you can see from the garden
  • A photo from the ground is enough. Stay off the roof.
  • The town and the height of the house

Questions people ask

Do you only repoint, or do you repair the stack as well?

Both sit on this page: repointing the joints, and repairs where the stack and the roof meet. If the brickwork needs more than repointing, Jamie will describe that after he has seen it.

Is chimney work the same as property maintenance?

Chimneys have this page. Property maintenance is the general upkeep of a building: small repairs, making good, and jobs that are not a roof or a chimney.
